The genre of Milonga music traveled from Africa. It mixed in the region of Río de la Plata in Argentina and Uruguay and has served as a precursor to the popular Tango, which was first danced in the poorer neighborhoods of Buenos Aires and Montevideo. Milonga as a style of music reached the height of its popularity in the late 19th century.
La Gata alludes to a cat tale teasing the owner to engage in a playful mode. It takes advantage of the brisk and vivid character of Milonga's melodic form.
