The pieces in this book are based on traditional music of the Colombian Andes. They require good technical skills controlling wide leaps, but they are also great for practicing circular breathing in the longer, legato phrases.
The genre of these pieces is called Bambuco, a typical product of cultural cross- breeding of Hispanic, African and Amerindian elements. The character of this genre will vary from one region to the next, from lively to melancholic, but it will always keep its composite meter, a simultaneous, dual subdivision in 3/4 and 6/8.
The composer, José Revelo Burbano, combines his Colombian rhythmic and melodic vocabulary with a colorful jazzy musical grammar, reflecting the modern strains of musical invention in his country.
